What to see in Hyderabad
Hyderabad with its charming blend of the ancient and modern, considered as
Istanbul of India, is one of ideal tourist destinations in India. The city
provides a gamut of attractions and activities along with standard facilities

The Charminar
A heart of Hyderabad city, the Charminar is a striking landmark of the city with
its four elaborate minarets and its four wide roads radiating in the four
cardinal directions. It is said to have model on Shia "tazias",
constructed in honor of Hussain, the son in law of Mohammad. The structure built
in 1591 is a fascinating blend of differently distinctive cultures- native
Telugu, Kannada and Marathi cultures, Persian culture from Iran and that of
Arabia-which created a unique Hyderabadi culture. The centuries-old-bazaars
surrounding the monument are still vibrant with tourists and pearl traders.
Golconda Fort
Originally founded by the Kakatiyas in A.D.1140, Golconda was later seized and
expanded by the Qutab Shahi kings into a massive fort of granite with walls and
ramparts extending to a length of 5 kilometers in circumstance. During the Qutub
Shahi Dynasty, from here the king ruled the nearby areas. The entire fort was
built in granite, flanked by 70 ramparts and 8 huge gates. Within the fort, a
city was also founded with its fame of vibrant diamond trade; it is said to be
the origin of the well-known Koh-i-noor diamond. Lying 11 kilometers west of
Hyderabad, the fort features intriguing palaces, factories, geniality in
acoustics and water supply systems.
Falaknuma Palace
This magnificent palace is the testimonial of the majesty of the Nizams of
Hyderabad, boated for its one of the most lavishly decorated interiors. Designed
by an Italian architect, the palace took 9 years of construction which was
completed in 1884. Falaknuma also houses a large collection of rare treasures
collected by the Nizams, including paintings, statues, furniture, manuscripts
and books. The jade collection of the palace is also considered to be unique in
the world.
Qutub Shahi Tombs
Two kilometers from the Golconda Fort stands the imposing Qutub Shahi Tombs,
surrounded by the landscaped garden. This is the site where six kings of Qutub
Shahi Dynasty, including Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah King, the founder of modern
Hyderabad. The tombs were built in domed shape, topped on the square-shaped base
which, in turn, surrounded by pointed arches. Each of them is graced by the
intricate carved stonework, and represents a unique style of a mixture of
Persian, Pathan and Hindu architecture. The dome of each king is differentiated
from their other members of royal family with the golden spires fitted over the
tombs. Apart from the rulers, the royal physicians, religious leaders, and the
favorite eunuchs of the royal household were also buried here. The tombs are
open to visitors all days except Fridays.
Salarjung Museum
Located on Musi River, Salarjung Museum is the third-largest museum in India,
well-known for its largest private collection in the world. The impressive
collection was belonged to Yusuf Ali Salar Jung I, the prime minister of Nizam
of Hyderabad and his ascendants. Passionate in antiques and rare objects,
Salarjung spent half of his income and half of his entire life collecting
artifacts, rare manuscripts, furniture, paintings, costumes, etc. Among his
great collection, the highlights include the "Veiled Rebecca", a
statute bought in 1876 in Rome; "Venice", a painting by Marc Aldine of
the 19th century; the jade rooms displaying armors and attires of the Mughal
emperors; the clock room exhibiting more than 300 clocks among which the 19th
century British musical clock-a toy soldier popping out to ring the bell-is the
most famous. The museum opens to visitors everyday except Fridays.
Birla Mandir
Standing on the hilltop of Kalapahad and overlooking the serene waters of
Hussain Sagar Lake, the Birla Mandir is an enchanting temple dedicated to Lord
Venkateswara. Offering the panoramic view from the top of the hill, the temple
itself is made of pure white marble and graced with its elaborate carvings, the
ceilings and the mythological figures, showing the adroitness of local
craftsmanship. In marble, captivating scenes from the great epics of Ramayana
and Mahabharata are finely depicted on the marble. The temple is even more the
magnificent when decorated with glowing lightings at night. The temple is open
to visitors from 7 a.m. to noon and from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. all days of the week.
Hussain Sagar Lake
The most popular spot for promenade, Hussain Sagar Lake is an artificial lake,
built under the reign of Ibrahim Qutub Shah, across a tributary of the Musi
River in 1562.
It is said that the lake was named to express gratitude of Ibrahim Qutub Shah
to Hussain Shah Wali who helped him recovering from illness. Linking the twin
cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the lake and its surroundings is dotted
with several parks and scenic spots. In the middle of the magnificent lake,
there stands a statute of Buddha placed on the rock of Gibraltar. The lake is
also has a board on the bund lined with lawns and dotted with 33 statues of
famous personalities of the Sate.
Lad Bazaar
Heading west from the Charminar, the bustling bazaar offering the local color
can be found. One of the oldest shopping centers of the city, Lad Bazaar still
keeps its vibrant atmosphere with it wide variety of henna, bridal wear, and
cosmetic. But what is the real draw is the fine selection of bangles made of lac,
glass, metal, semi-precious stones, and pearls. This is then a paradise for
shoppers, especially for ladies.
Ramoji Film City
The largest, most comprehensive and professionally planed film production center
in the world, Ramoji Film City is located at an hour's distance from Hyderabad.
Sprawling over an area of more than 1000 acres, the film city has surpassed the
Universal Studio of Hollywood in size and facilities offered. The film city's
grounds are tastefully landscaped, well-maintained, and finely designed with
palace-like buildings, temples, shopping arcades, railway station, airport, and
other settings that a producer can dream of.
Nehru Zoological Park
Sprawling over a green expanse of 300 acres, the Nehru Zoological Park is one of
the largest and best zoos in Asia. The zoo is a good habitat to the nearly 1,500
species of animals, birds and reptiles. Among these different animals, the
popular ones are white peacocks, mynahs, chimpanzees, and rhinoceros. The real
draw of the zoo is, however, the Lion Safari where wild animals like lions,
tigers, rhinos, wild oxen, panthers, and so on, roam freely in its natural
habitat. Vans barbed with wrought iron are available to take visitors into the
world of these wild creatures to watch them in their natural behavior and in
close-up. Apart from the animals, the zoo also provides, a nocturnal zoo, a
pre-historic dinosaur park, a natural history museum, parks, a mini-train which
make the park an ideal site for family-holiday-makers.
